How Long Is the CELPIP Test? Section-by-Section Timing

The CELPIP-General test takes just under 3 hours, and you sit it in one go: four sections back to back, with no separate speaking appointment. The shorter CELPIP General LS test (listening and speaking only) takes about 70 minutes.
That's the official answer. The more useful answer is how those minutes are split, because the test doesn't feel evenly paced from the inside.
| Section | Official time | What's in it |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 46-55 minutes | 38 questions across 6 parts |
| Reading | 43-56 minutes | 38 questions across 4 parts |
| Writing | 53 minutes | 2 written tasks |
| Speaking | 15 minutes | 8 recorded tasks |
| Total | Under 2 h 50 min | One sitting, no scheduled breaks |
How Long Each CELPIP Section Takes
The ranges above are official. How each one feels is a different story.
Why Listening and Reading show ranges
Listening runs 46 to 55 minutes, and Reading from 43 to 56 because every CELPIP version carries a few unscored trial questions, and the count varies. You can't tell which ones are unscored, so treat every question as real. The full question-by-question structure is in our CELPIP test format guide.
One quirk worth knowing: in Listening, the audio plays once and you read the answer choices yourself. Slow readers lose seconds here that the timer doesn't give back.
Writing and Speaking are shorter than they sound
Writing gives you 53 minutes for two tasks: 27 for the email, 26 for the survey response. Speaking compresses all eight tasks into about 15 minutes, most of them 30 seconds of prep followed by 60 to 90 seconds of recording. It's over before your nerves settle.
Where does the time actually go? Celpify's full mock tests run on the same section clocks, and we see the same pattern in attempt after attempt: Reading is the squeeze. People who cruise through Part 1 arrive at Part 4 with single-digit minutes left. In Writing, rewriting your email opener three times quietly eats five minutes you'll want back at the proofreading stage. A full mock test is the cheapest way to meet that clock before test day.
Door to Door: Your Real Test-Day Timeline
The 2 hours 50 minutes is seat time. Your day at the test centre is longer.
Before the first Listening question, you'll go through check-in: photo ID verification, storing your belongings, and getting seated at your station. There's also a short on-screen setup before the test proper begins. Plan to arrive about 30 minutes early; our test day checklist walks through what to bring and what to leave at home.
Booking the LS test instead? Your sitting is about 70 minutes: Listening plus Speaking, same centre routine.
A realistic block to reserve in your calendar for CELPIP-General is four hours door to door. Shorter is likely. Counting on shorter is how people arrive stressed.
No Scheduled Breaks
CELPIP-General runs straight through all four sections in one sitting, with no scheduled breaks between them. Eat beforehand, use the washroom before check-in, and plan your morning around an unbroken 3 hours.
CELPIP Test Length: Quick Answers
Timing questions don't end when the test does. Results arrive in 2 to 4 business days (covered in our CELPIP results guide), and scores stay valid for two years from your score report date.
