CELPIP Preparation Course: How to Choose the Right Type

CELPIP Preparation Course: How to Choose the Right Type

Pick the type of CELPIP preparation course before you pick a school. Most of what you pay a person for is marking your Writing and Speaking. CELPIP's free sample test already lets you "See the correct answers for the Listening and Reading components", but an email or a spoken answer has no answer key, so someone has to judge it (here's what a Level 7 and a Level 10 email look like).

On October 13, 2026 we read provider price pages and worked out what each CELPIP course costs per hour. Live group classes came to about $18 to $19 per class hour, and private tutors charged about $20 to $65 an hour. CELPIP's official webinars cost nothing. Before you pay for any CELPIP training, find your weakest skill first. It decides which type is worth the money.

Decision flowchart for choosing CELPIP preparation help. It starts with: which skill is below your target? Listening or Reading only: the answer key already shows your mistakes, so use timed self-practice and the free Listening and Reading Pro webinars, and a course is optional. Writing or Speaking: can someone mark your answers against CELPIP's four scoring criteria? If yes, self-practice plus that marker, with no course needed. If no, do you need fixed class times? If yes, a group class that includes marking; if no, a few private tutor hours with self-practice in between. Several skills 2 or more levels short: build general English first with a longer course, or LINC if you're a permanent resident. A side box says LINC classes are free and a CLB 4 or higher certificate in Listening and Speaking can be your proof for the citizenship language requirement.

CELPIP Preparation Course Types: Classes, Tutors, Webinars and Self-Study

Most CELPIP classes, tutors and coaching programs fit one of six types. Step through them, then compare them in the table.

Slide 1 of 6, official free help: webinars, a sample test, a practice test and study packs. What you get: 2-hour live webinars per skill, recordings on YouTube and free Pro Study Packs. Marks your Writing and Speaking: no, because webinars analyse sample answers and the sample test has answers for Listening and Reading only. Schedule: webinars repeat monthly, and tests and recordings are there any time. Cost we found: $0. Fits if you're starting out, or Listening or Reading is your weak skill.
Official free help. Facts from celpip.ca and CELPIP's study packs, read October 13, 2026.
Slide 2 of 6, official self-study: CELPIP Prep - Essential and Plus, and practice test sets. What you get: Essential has videos, quizzes, a study plan and 2 eBooks; Plus adds Practice Test Set 1, an AI assistant and 4 eBooks. Marks your Writing and Speaking: unclear, because the tests show sample answers and the store doesn't say whether the AI assistant marks yours. Schedule: any time, with 3 months of access for Essential and 6 for Plus. Cost we found: CAD 49 for Essential, 99 for Plus and 35 per practice test set. Fits if you want official practice tests and study well alone.

Slide 3 of 6, group class, including the official CELPIP Preparation Program. What you get: a teacher, classmates and strategy for each skill, online or in person. Marks your Writing and Speaking: maybe, so ask how many minutes go to your own answers. Schedule: fixed class times, often weekly. Cost we found: about $18 to $19 per class hour. Fits if you need set hours to keep studying at all.
Group class. Prices from two online schools, October 13, 2026. Each Preparation Program sets its own price.
Slide 4 of 6, private tutor or coaching, one-on-one online or in person. What you get: a teacher for you alone, and you choose what to work on. Marks your Writing and Speaking: yes, if you bring your answers. Schedule: you book the hours. Cost we found: about $20 to $65 an hour. Fits if Writing or Speaking is stuck and you can't tell why.
Private tutor or coaching. The range comes from provider pages and tutor listings, October 13, 2026.
Slide 5 of 6, self-paced online practice: timed questions with instant marking. What you get: practice tests in all four skills with timers and instant results. Marks your Writing and Speaking: by AI, an instant estimate that isn't a person or an official score. Schedule: any time, as often as you like. Cost: varies, so check what's free first. Fits if you need many marked answers, alone or between tutor sessions.
Self-paced online practice. Instant AI marking is an estimate, not an official score.
Slide 6 of 6, LINC classes, government-funded language classes. What you get: general English classes from basic to advanced, after an assessment. Marks your Writing and Speaking: not against CELPIP's criteria. Schedule: set by each class, and you're assessed before you start. Cost we found: free for permanent residents and protected persons. Fits if you're a permanent resident building general English, or you need a CLB 4 or higher certificate for citizenship.

    Schedule

Classes meet at set times. The free webinars run on a monthly calendar, and the recordings are there whenever you want them. A tutor fits around your week. Official self-study and self-paced practice work at 2 a.m. if that's when you're free.

    Which type fits you

Most CELPIP courses sit in the group class and tutor rows, but plenty of people need neither. When Listening or Reading is the gap, the free official material and timed practice usually cover it, because an answer key shows you every mistake. Writing and Speaking need marking, whether it comes from a tutor, a class or instant AI marking between sessions. Pay for a group class if you need someone to hold you to a timetable, and check what it includes first. If you're a permanent resident with several skills well below target, LINC builds general English at no cost.

What a CELPIP Course Costs per Hour

A package price hides the hourly rate, and the hourly rate hides how much of each hour goes to your own answers.

Animated bar chart in two views. View one shows what one hour of teaching costs in Canadian dollars: official free webinars $0, live group class $18 to $19, private tutor $20 to $65, and a one-on-one course with fees about $65. View two shows the minutes of each paid hour spent on your own Writing and Speaking: webinars 0, sample answers only; group class 0 in one base package we priced; private tutor and one-on-one course up to 60. A note says personal marking sold as an add-on to a group class cost $50 to $67 per hour of feedback. A last frame says these are prices found on October 13, 2026, by course type, in CAD with tax as each page showed it, and that prices change.

    How we priced it

On October 13, 2026, we read seven provider pages: two schools with live online group classes (one also sells private classes and feedback as add-ons), a one-on-one school, a school that lists private classes with rates on request, an independent tutor, a tutor marketplace and a community class. We divided each price by the teaching hours the page stated and left tax as the page showed it. We left out one test centre's price list from 2019. We don't name providers, and these are ranges, not averages.

Group courses came to about $18 to $19 per class hour. Private time ran from about $20 an hour, for the cheapest CELPIP listings on a tutor marketplace, to about $65 at a one-on-one school once its fees were added.

A worked example: what the marking costs

One 12-hour group course worked out to $18.75 an hour, and its base package listed no private time. Adding 1.5 hours of private marking cost $75, about $50 an hour, for time with a teacher on your own answers. A 45-minute video-feedback add-on worked out to about $67 an hour.

Is it worth it? Set it against the test fee. CELPIP-General costs $299 plus tax in Canada, so if 90 minutes of marking shows you what's holding your Writing back, it costs less than sitting the test again at the same level.

Questions to ask before you pay for a CELPIP test preparation course

    1. How many minutes a week will a teacher spend on my own Writing and Speaking?

    2. Do you mark against CELPIP's four scoring criteria? For Writing they're Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment. For Speaking, Listenability takes the place of Readability. Our guide to how CELPIP is scored explains each one.

    3. Are your practice tests official CELPIP tests, or did you write them?

    4. Is there a registration fee, and what do I get back if I cancel before the start? Some schools we read added a registration fee of $75 to $100.

    Red flags

Be wary of "real past papers". The celpip.ca store sells official practice tests, and we found no past exams for sale there, so ask where the questions come from. Walk away from anyone who guarantees a level, too. Nobody can promise what you'll score.

Memorised answers are the other trap. CELPIP's Writing study pack says studying test material and learning English "are two different things", and that building your English writing skills should be the main focus. Some course pages warn that CELPIP examiners can spot a rehearsed Speaking answer. There's no examiner in the room: celpip.ca says the Speaking Test "is delivered through a computer so there is no human examiner". A memorised answer still tends to miss the question on the screen, and Task Fulfillment checks relevance.

Check the test facts on any course page as well. One page we read gave the CELPIP-General fee as CAD 280, while celpip.ca lists $299 plus tax in Canada.

Where Can I Study CELPIP for Free?

CELPIP's own webinars are the nearest thing to a free CELPIP preparation course. LINC classes are free too, if you're eligible.

celpip.ca offers "over 10 hours of free webinars, a free sample test, a free practice test when you create a CELPIP Account". Start there.

    Free CELPIP webinars

Each webinar is 2 hours long and delivered in English. There's a Pro session for each skill plus a general overview webinar, and the sessions repeat every month; October's calendar ran them in several time zones. You can ask the instructor questions in every session. Pro session attendees get a free Study Pack with the sample answers, analysis and strategies from the session. The packs are also free to download on celpip.ca, and CELPIP posts the recordings on its YouTube channel.

You won't get a mark on your own work, though. The webinars go through sample answers, and we found nothing on celpip.ca or in the study packs saying they mark yours. Below is CELPIP's own recording of its General Overview webinar, posted in March 2026 and about 2 hours 18 minutes long, so you can see a session before you sign up.

CELPIP-General Overview webinar (official CELPIP recording)

    Free practice tests

The free sample test lets you "See the correct answers for the Listening and Reading components". For Writing and Speaking, it shows you the format and the timing. Our free CELPIP practice test with answers covers all four skills, and our list of every official CELPIP study material sorts the rest into free and paid.

LINC: free classes for permanent residents

If you're a permanent resident or a protected person, you can take government-funded language classes at no cost. They're called Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC). You're assessed before you start, and the classes teach general English at basic, intermediate and advanced levels rather than the CELPIP test itself.

They can also help with citizenship. When you complete a CLB level, you get a certificate, and canada.ca says a certificate at CLB 4 or higher in speaking and listening can be your proof for the citizenship language requirement. canada.ca offers the classes to permanent residents and protected persons only, so most people still applying for PR, through Express Entry for example, can't use them yet.

Online CELPIP Classes in Canada: Live, Recorded or Self-Paced?

CELPIP preparation online comes in four formats, and a CELPIP course online can be any of them. They differ in when the teaching happens and whether anyone marks your work.

    Live CELPIP classes online

A teacher and a small group meet on a video call at set times. You're mostly paying for the timetable, so this suits you if you won't study without one.

    Recorded video courses

You watch the lessons when you like, usually with quizzes in between. CELPIP Prep - Essential (CAD 49 for 3 months) is the official one. Good for format and strategy. Unless the course adds marking, though, nobody reads your answers.

    One-on-one video tutoring

It costs the most per hour, and every minute is about your work. Bring answers you wrote or recorded under the real timer, so the session goes on marking them instead of watching you write.

    Self-paced practice platforms

This is the cheapest kind of CELPIP training online: timed practice with instant results. Listening and Reading get an answer key. Writing and Speaking get an AI estimate against the four scoring criteria, in minutes and as often as you like. It isn't a person, and it isn't an official score. It can show you where an answer lost points. Working out why the same mistakes keep coming back is harder, and a teacher helps more with that.

Short crash courses exist too, some of them a week long with feedback. A week is enough to learn the format, but not enough to move your English up a level.

How to find an official CELPIP Preparation Program

CELPIP's own classroom course is the CELPIP Preparation Program. CELPIP experts built it around the four test components, with a workbook for each, and celpip.ca says each instructor can "provide feedback on your responses". Institutions run it independently. On October 13, 2026, celpip.ca's directory listed about 145 of them, some online and some in person (the link is in the sources below). You enrol with the institution directly, and it sets its own price. Enrolling doesn't book your test, either: celpip.ca says test centres don't handle test registration, so you register for the test yourself.

What Self-Practice Fixes, and What It Doesn't

Our own practice data shows what instant marking changed for learners, and where it stopped helping.

We looked at Writing and Speaking practice on Celpify from August 1 to mid-October 2026: 2,200 marked answers from 192 learners. Every level below is Celpify's AI estimate on CELPIP's 0 to 12 scale, not an official CELPIP score.

    Learners redo tasks, and quickly

In that window, 49 of 133 Writing learners (37%) and 54 of 113 Speaking learners (48%) answered at least one prompt a second time. Most did it within a day: 80% of second tries in Writing and 86% in Speaking.

    Same prompt, second try

Writing went from 7.48 to 8.44 on average, a rise of 0.96 (84 pairs from 48 learners). Speaking went from 6.37 to 6.97, up 0.60 (278 pairs from 53 learners). More than half the second tries scored higher, 56% in Writing and 54% in Speaking, while 11% and 17% scored lower.

Readability moved most in Writing: up 1.18, from 6.62, the lowest start of the four areas. It covers paragraphing, connectors, grammar, spelling and punctuation, which are easy to fix once someone points them out. In Speaking, Listenability started lowest (5.79). Both match what we found on first tries in our look at the weakest scoring areas.

    A new Speaking prompt

A fresh prompt of the same task is closer to the real test. In Speaking, a learner's next new prompt averaged only 0.20 above their first (148 pairs from 22 learners), against 0.60 for a second try at the same prompt, and 31% scored a level or more lower. By the third prompt the gain was 0.64 (116 pairs from 19 learners). All four scoring areas moved by similar amounts, new prompt or not, between 0.47 and 0.78.

We left out the new-prompt comparison for Writing. Writing averages shifted during the window, and two prompts written days apart could pick up that shift instead of real progress. Same-prompt retries came minutes apart, so the shift doesn't touch the Writing figures above.

Which scoring area moved with practice

Average change in Celpify's AI level estimate (0 to 12) per scoring area, August 1 to mid-October 2026. AI estimates, not official CELPIP scores.

Same prompt: try 1 to try 2New prompt, same task: 1st prompt to 3rd

Writing same prompt: 84 pairs from 48 learners

    Content/Coherence+0.88Vocabulary+0.90Readability+1.18Task Fulfillment+0.90

The Writing new-prompt comparison is left out: Writing averages shifted during the window.

Speaking same prompt: 278 pairs from 53 learners; new prompt: 116 pairs from 19 learners

    Content/Coherence+0.60+0.64Vocabulary+0.48+0.47Listenability+0.61+0.59Task Fulfillment+0.72+0.78

The groups are small, so read the gaps as directions.

What that means if you're buying help

Fixing an answer after it's marked is quick. In Writing, the biggest jump on a rewrite came in Readability, the grammar, spelling and paragraph mistakes the marking had just pointed out. Carrying a fix into the next answer is slower: in Speaking, the next new prompt gained a third as much as a repeat. So if your marked answers keep getting the same notes on new prompts, a teacher who explains the pattern behind them may be worth paying for. That's our judgement: this data doesn't include teachers.

Volume matters as well, and most learners didn't practise much. Of the 192 learners, 152 (79%) had four or fewer marked Writing or Speaking answers in the window. The 22 who had 20 or more made three-quarters of all the marked answers. Compare that with the add-on we priced above, which bought 1.5 hours of private marking.

Read these numbers with care. Learners chose what to redo, and people who scored low on a first try may be likelier to try again, so part of the gain could be a low score bouncing back. A second try at the same prompt is a rewrite after feedback, not a new test. Learners who reached a third prompt may differ from those who stopped. The groups are small, so treat the differences as directions rather than exact sizes.

    Buying help for a retake

Start with your score report before you look at any course. If Writing or Speaking missed your target, pay for marking: a few tutor hours, or a class that includes it, with instant-marked practice in between. If Listening or Reading missed, timed practice with an answer key shows you the same mistakes for less. Book the next sitting once the marking shows progress. Each sitting costs $299 plus tax in Canada, and celpip.ca allows no more than one test session within 5 calendar days. Our CELPIP retake strategy has a plan for each size of gap.
