    CELPIP Score Calculator

Your count out of 38 to level, CLB and CRS

Type how many Listening or Reading questions you got right out of 38. The calculator checks CELPIP's published chart and shows both levels when your count falls where two bands overlap. Then it turns the result into CLB and CRS points.

    Work out your level

Listening and Reading take a count out of 38. Writing and Speaking take a level.

CELPIP publishes approximate ranges rather than fixed cut scores. On the official chart, Listening 33 out of 38 falls in both the Level 8 band (30-33) and the Level 9 band (33-35), so 33 can be either. Score equating on your test form decides which. CELPIP levels match CLB levels one to one, and each skill earns its own CRS points.

    Listening

    Level 8 or 9

    / 38

33 sits in two bands. You're at Level 8 or higher, and 34 correct clears the overlap for Level 9.

    Reading

    Level 8

    / 38

30 sits in one band. 32 correct clears the overlap for Level 9.

    Writing

    Speaking

Writing and Speaking have no answer count. Raters give a level, so pick the one on your score report or your practice feedback.

    Lowest skill

CLB 8 (Listening, Reading, Writing). Programs read each skill on its own, so this is the number that has to clear a minimum. Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker) asks for CLB 7 in every skill.

    Counts that clear the overlap

    • Listening: 34 correct or more for CLB 9 on the chart. You're 1 answer short.
    • Reading: 32 correct or more for CLB 9 on the chart. You're 2 answers short.
    • Writing and Speaking need a 9 from the raters.

Approximate, from the chart on celpip.ca

The bands come from the "example chart" on the CELPIP Test Results page. Test forms differ a little in difficulty and are equated, so celpip.ca says the raw score needed for a level "may vary slightly from one test to another".

Treat this as an estimate. Your official level comes from the form you sit.

celpip.ca calls this an "example chart" and says the raw score for a level "may vary slightly from one test to another". M is the chart's label for the bottom band. Since December 2023 CELPIP's score charts show 0 to 2 there instead: a 2 is CLB 1 or 2, and 0 or 1 means there wasn't enough to assess. Source: CELPIP Test Results.

    Why 33 can be an 8 or a 9

What decides which band a count lands in.

Animation: a counter moves through CELPIP Listening scores from 26 to 38 over the official bands for levels 6 to 10-12, and two bands light up together at 27, 28, 30, 31, 33 and 35
Listening 26 to 38 on the official bands. Two bands light up at 27-28, 30-31, 33 and 35.

A computer marks every Listening and Reading question right or wrong. A correct answer earns one point, a blank counts as wrong, and a wrong answer costs nothing extra.

That count never appears on your report, though. Test forms differ a little in difficulty, so CELPIP turns the count into a scaled score through score equating, and the scaled score becomes a level. Equating is why 30 right on a harder form and 30 right on an easier one don't have to end up at the same level.

So the chart can only be approximate, and it overlaps where one form's Level 8 is another form's Level 9. If your count sits in an overlap, plan for the lower level and aim for the count that clears it. In Listening, that's 34 for Level 9.

    Step 1 of 3: Test 1 Listening on Celpify has six parts with 8, 5, 6, 5, 8 and 6 questions, 38 in total
Test 1 Listening has six parts and 38 questions, the number the real test scores.
    Step 2 of 3: six example part scores, 7 of 8, 5 of 5, 5 of 6, 4 of 5, 7 of 8 and 5 of 6, adding up to 33 out of 38
    Each part shows how many you got right. Add the six: 7 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 7 + 5 = 33.
Step 3 of 3: Listening 33 out of 38 in the calculator gives CELPIP level 8 or 9, CLB 8 or 9, and 23 or 31 CRS points
Put 33 into the calculator: Level 8 or 9, CLB 8 or 9, and 23 or 31 CRS points for Listening.
    1 / 3

On Celpify, each Test 1 part is scored on its own, so your count out of 38 is the sum of the part scores: six parts for Listening (8, 5, 6, 5, 8 and 6 questions) and four for Reading (11, 8, 9 and 10).

A practice count isn't equated the way an official form is, so read the level as a rough guide. The useful part is the gap: how many more answers you need, and which part cost you the most.

    Before you trust the number

Three things a count out of 38 can't tell you.

    Writing and Speaking

    No count to enter

Raters score these two. celpip.ca says three to five raters rate each Speaking performance and four to six rate each Writing performance, working independently. Their ratings in four categories become your level, so the calculator asks for the level from your score report or practice feedback.

    The Average Score

CELPIP-General reports have shown an Average Score since December 2023: the average of your four component scores. celpip.ca says it isn't equivalent to any CLB level and isn't relevant for IRCC purposes, so the calculator leaves it out.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Level 9 or Level 10 and above. On CELPIP's approximate chart, Reading 33 sits in both the Level 9 band (31-33) and the 10-12 band (33-38), so it means CLB 9 or CLB 10+. 34 or more correct is in the top band only.

Level 9. Listening 34 sits only in the 33-35 band on CELPIP's chart, so it's CLB 9 and worth 31 CRS points for that skill as a single applicant. 36 or more correct puts you in the 10-12 band alone.

Level 7 or Level 8. 31 is the top of the Level 7 band (27-31) and also inside the Level 8 band (30-33). 32 correct is the first count that sits in the Level 8 band only.

A computer marks each question right or wrong, and each correct answer is one point. Blank answers count as wrong, and there's no penalty for a wrong answer. Your count then becomes a scaled score through score equating, which corrects for small differences in difficulty between test forms. The scaled score becomes your CELPIP level. That's why CELPIP only publishes approximate ranges.

No. CELPIP-General score reports have shown an Average Score since December 2023: the average of your four component scores. celpip.ca says it is not equivalent to any CLB level and is "not relevant for IRCC purposes". IRCC reads the level in each skill on its own.
