Can You Retake Only One CELPIP Section? The Retake Rules

No. You can't retake only one CELPIP section. Every CELPIP-General retake is the whole test again: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking in one sitting, for the full fee. IRCC also asks for one test result, so you can't pair a new Reading score with an old Writing score.
You still have real choices, and the right one depends on two things: what the score is for, and which skill missed. A Writing or Speaking score that's one level short can go to re-evaluation first. Citizenship applicants who only need Listening and Speaking can take the shorter CELPIP-General LS test. Everyone else books the full test again, under a waiting rule that celpip.ca's own pages state three different ways.
Find your case in the chart, then read the part that fits.

What You Can Do Instead, Skill by Skill
The skill that missed your target decides whether re-evaluation is worth trying before you pay for another test.
Can I retake CELPIP Writing only? Try re-evaluation first
Re-evaluation is the only CELPIP request you can make for a single component. You ask for it in your CELPIP Account within 6 months of your test date, and you can pick some or all components. Each component can be re-evaluated only once, and you can't cancel a request after you submit it.
The fee comes back if your level goes up, and celpip.ca says results take about 1 to 2 weeks. If Writing comes back one level higher, you've fixed the score without sitting the test again. If nothing changes, you're back to a full retake.
Can I retake CELPIP Reading only? No, and re-evaluation rarely helps
Listening and Reading answers are either right or wrong, and a computer does all the scoring. celpip.ca is direct about it: re-evaluating these two components "is unlikely to result in a change in your scores as they are computer rated." So if Reading or Listening is the problem, plan a full retake.
Some pages claim re-evaluation is only for Writing and Speaking. That's wrong. The policy lets you request any component, Listening and Reading included. CELPIP just warns you not to expect a different result.
Short in two skills, or by two levels?
A second rating is a long shot for a gap that size. Study first, then book the full test, with a CELPIP retake strategy sized to how far off you are.

Citizenship vs Express Entry: The LS Exception
The closest thing to a CELPIP retake for one module is a different, shorter test, and only citizenship applicants can use it.
Citizenship: CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking
If you're 18 to 54, canada.ca asks for proof that you can "speak and listen at the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) Level 4 or higher". Reading and Writing aren't part of it. CELPIP sells a two-skill test for this case, CELPIP-General LS. celpip.ca lists it at $199 plus tax in Canada and about 1 hour 10 minutes, compared with $299 plus tax for the four-skill CELPIP-General.
There's a limit, though. IRCC's language requirements say the LS test is "accepted by IRCC for citizenship purposes only." It also isn't a one-skill retake: if only Speaking is short, you sit Listening again too. The two tests are compared in CELPIP-General vs General LS, and the citizenship side is in CELPIP for citizenship.
Express Entry and PR: the full CELPIP-General, one result
For Express Entry, canada.ca keeps it to one line: "You must take the CELPIP-General test." You enter the test results in your profile, with the result's certificate number and test PIN if the system asks for them. The results "must be less than 2 years old" when you complete your Express Entry profile and again when you submit your application for permanent residence, a timing trap we cover in how long CELPIP is valid.
Why there's no CELPIP one skill retake
If you've heard of a one-skill retake, it was probably the IELTS kind. IELTS sells a product called IELTS One Skill Retake, and IRCC turns it down. The Express Entry testing page says: "We don't accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry." IRCC's language requirements add that the Economic Mobility Pathway Pilot is the only program that accepts it.
CELPIP has nothing like it. celpip.ca's overview lists two tests, CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS, and you book either one whole.
Can I combine my best CELPIP scores from two tests?
No. IRCC asks for one test result (its certificate or registration number), and it refuses single-skill retakes such as IELTS One Skill Retake. A report that takes Reading from April and Writing from March doesn't exist, so there's nothing to submit.
Picture two sittings a month apart. In March: Listening 9, Reading 6, Writing 8, Speaking 9. In April, Reading climbs to 8, but Writing slips to 6 and Speaking to 8. The best of both would read 9, 8, 8, 9. Nobody can give you that report, and if you need CLB 7 in every skill, both real ones fall short because each has a 6.

Resit four skills, train one
You have to resit all four skills, but you don't have to study all four equally. Put most of your hours into the skill that missed, and keep practising the others a little so they don't slip the way Writing did in the April example.
On Celpify, Test 1 practice is free for every skill, so you can start on Reading by itself in CELPIP Reading practice. When you want that one section under test conditions, a single-skill mock runs just that section with the same time limits as the real test. Single-skill mocks are part of the paid CELPIP mock tests.
The CELPIP Retake Policy: How Soon and How Often
The waiting rule reads differently depending on which celpip.ca page you open.
We read celpip.ca's Policies & Forms, Canada and India pages on October 12, 2026. Here's what each one says:
| celpip.ca page | What it says about a second sitting |
|---|---|
| Policies & Forms (same wording in the contact FAQ) | "You may register for no more than one Test Session within five (5) calendar days." CELPIP can cancel a registration that breaks this rule. |
| Canada country page | Sessions must be "at least four (4) calendar days apart from each other." |
| India country page | Sessions must be "at least thirty (30) calendar days apart from each other." |
In Canada, follow the policy page. It's the stricter of the two Canadian versions, and if you leave a week between sittings you're clear of both. If a site tells you everyone has to wait 30 days, that figure matches the India page, not the rule in Canada.
Should you book before your results arrive? None of the policies we read stops you. But scores appear in your CELPIP Account 2 to 4 business days after the test, so rebooking straight away can mean paying for a test you didn't need. The CELPIP Office also "recommends that you do additional studying before retaking the test." See the scores first, then decide.
How many times can you take CELPIP?
Neither the Policies & Forms page nor the contact FAQ limits the number of attempts. The spacing rule is the only retake rule they give. Each time you retake the CELPIP test, though, you pay the full CELPIP test fee: $299 plus tax in Canada for CELPIP-General, or $199 plus tax for LS, and prices differ outside Canada. You may see about $290 quoted online, but celpip.ca's Canadian price is $299 plus tax.
