    What this task tests

    Responding to Survey Questions

    The response is scored on the same four traits as Task 1: Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability, and Task Fulfillment. Content and Coherence carries the weight here, because the task is an argument: a clear choice, two or three reasons, and support for each reason.

    The trap

    Responses that discuss both options equally, or that pick one and then list its disadvantages, lose Task Fulfillment marks. The survey asks which option you prefer and why. Commit in the first sentence and spend the rest of the response supporting that choice.

    How to score higher on Task 2

    1. State your choice in the first sentence. The reader should never wonder which option you picked.
    2. Give two reasons with one concrete example each rather than four reasons with none.
    3. Address the organisation, not a friend. A survey response is semi-formal: polite, direct, no slang.
    4. End with one sentence that restates the choice. It closes the argument and it is easy to write under time pressure.

    Task 2 questions people ask

    What is Task 2 asking for?
    A written opinion. A survey offers two options; you pick one and explain your reasons in 150 to 200 words within 26 minutes.
    Can I write about both options?
    You may mention the other option briefly to contrast it, but the response must clearly support one choice. Balanced essays lose marks for task fulfilment.
    Who is the reader?
    The organisation that sent the survey. Write to them in a polite, semi-formal style.
    How is Task 2 scored?
    On four traits: Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability, and Task Fulfillment, combined into your CELPIP Writing level, which equals your CLB level.
