CELPIP Speaking Task 7: Expressing Opinions

Task 7 asks for your opinion on an everyday issue: whether children should have phones at school, whether cities should charge for parking downtown, whether working from home is better than the office. You get 30 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to speak, the same long speaking time as Task 1.

    What this task tests

    Expressing Opinions

A strong answer states a position in the first sentence, gives two or three reasons with an example each, deals briefly with the other side, and closes by restating the position. It is scored on Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability, and Task Fulfillment.

Celpify's free Test 1 item for Task 7 includes the prompt, the timers, a sample answer with a four-trait commentary, and AI feedback on your recording scored the way the real test does.

    The trap

Sitting on the fence costs Task Fulfillment marks. 'It depends' is not an opinion. Choose a side in the first sentence; you can still admit one good point on the other side later.

How to score higher on Task 7

    1. Plan three beats in the 30 seconds: position, reason one with an example, reason two with an example.
    2. Use opinion language early: 'I believe', 'in my view', 'I strongly think'. It tells the listener where you stand.
    3. Add one sentence that acknowledges the other side, then return to your position. It shows coherence without changing your stance.
    4. Use the full 90 seconds. Repeat the position in different words at the end if you have time left.

Scored on four traits: Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability, Task Fulfillment. Celpify's AI feedback scores the same four traits the way the real test does.

    Task 7 questions people ask

    How long is Task 7?
30 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to speak.
Do I need to know facts about the topic?
No. Topics are everyday issues, and personal examples count as support. The score is for how you argue, not for what you know.
    Can I argue both sides?

    How is Task 7 scored?
On four traits: Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability, and Task Fulfillment.
    Is Task 7 practice free?
