CELPIP Reading Part 2: Reading to Apply a Diagram

Part 2 shows two things at once: a diagram on one side and an email on the other. The diagram might be a course timetable, a price comparison, a floor plan or a set of travel options. The email is written by someone who is using the diagram to make a choice.

    What this part tests

    Reading to Apply a Diagram

Five questions are drop-down blanks inside the email. To fill each blank you have to read the diagram, find the detail the writer is referring to, and pick the option that matches it. Three more questions test your understanding of the writer's situation and decision.

You have nine minutes. Celpify's free Test 1 item for Part 2 includes the diagram image, the email and the answer explanations, so you can see exactly which cell of the diagram each blank pointed to.

    The trap

Part 2 blanks are answered by the diagram, not by the email. Readers who fill the blanks from the surrounding sentence alone pick the option that sounds natural, and the option that sounds natural is usually the wrong row of the table.

How to score higher on Part 2

    1. Spend the first minute reading the diagram's headings and units before you touch the email. Know what each column and row means.
    2. For each blank, find the sentence's subject in the diagram first, then choose the option. Every blank points to one specific cell.
    3. Watch for conditions in the diagram such as 'weekends only' or 'members'. The writer's situation decides which row applies.
    4. Leave the three comprehension questions for last; they are answered from the email as a whole once the blanks are done.

Part of the 38 scored Reading questions. The raw score converts to a CELPIP level from M to 12, and that level equals your CLB level.

    Part 2 questions people ask

What does Part 2 look like?
A diagram on the left and an email on the right. The email has five drop-down blanks, and three separate questions follow. You have nine minutes.
    What kinds of diagrams appear?
Timetables, price tables, maps, floor plans, advertisements and comparison charts, always about an everyday choice the email writer is making.
Do I need to read the diagram carefully?
Yes. The five blanks are answered from the diagram. The email tells you what the writer needs; the diagram tells you which option fits.
How many questions and how much time?
Eight questions in nine minutes: five blanks and three comprehension questions.
Is the Part 2 practice free?
The Test 1 item is free without an account and includes the diagram and answer explanations. Tests 2 to 50 come with a plan.
