CELPIP Listening Part 3: Listening for Information

Part 3 is the longest conversation in the Listening test. One person asks about a service, a program or a process, and the other explains it: how registration works, what a warranty covers, how a community event is organised. The clip runs two to two and a half minutes and plays once.

One conversation of about 2 to 2.5 minutes in which one person explains a service, a process or an event to the other, then 6 spoken questions with four answer choices and 30 seconds each.

    What this part tests

    Listening for Information

The six questions target specific information: numbers, dates, conditions, sequences and exceptions. Because the clip is long, the questions are spread across it, and the last question often depends on something said in the final twenty seconds.

Questions are spoken after the audio, with four choices on screen and 30 seconds each. Celpify's free Test 1 item for Part 3 includes the transcript, so you can see how the details were spread across the conversation.

    The trap

Part 3 distractors are built from real details placed in the wrong slot: the right fee attached to the wrong service, the right day attached to the wrong event. Matching a number you remember is not enough; match the number to its subject.

How to score higher on Part 3

    1. Use a two-column note layout: the item on the left, its detail on the right. Fees, dates and conditions each get their own line.
    2. Expect a correction. Speakers in Part 3 often update a detail mid-conversation, and the updated value is the one the question wants.
    3. Do not stop taking notes when you think you have enough. The sixth question is usually about the end of the clip.
    4. Read all four choices before answering. Two of them will contain true details from the clip that answer a different question.

Part of the 38 scored Listening questions. The raw score converts to a CELPIP level from M to 12, and that level equals your CLB level.

    Part 3 questions people ask

How many questions does Part 3 have?
Six, asked after a single clip of about two to two and a half minutes. The part takes about six minutes.
Who is speaking in Part 3?
Two people, one asking and one explaining. It is still a conversation, not a lecture, so the information arrives through questions and answers.
What type of information is tested?
Specific facts: prices, times, dates, steps in a process, conditions and exceptions, plus the occasional inference about what the listener should do next.
Can I take notes during the audio?
Yes, and you should. The official test allows notes, and Celpify practice gives you the same chance to use them under the same 30-second answer timer.
    Is Part 3 practice free?
The Test 1 item is free with transcript and answer explanations. The other 49 Part 3 items come with a plan.
