CELPIP Listening Part 2: Daily Life Conversation
Part 2 is a relaxed conversation between two people who know each other: friends planning a weekend, roommates talking about a bill, colleagues deciding where to eat. The clip runs about one and a half to two minutes and plays once.
One conversation of about 1.5 to 2 minutes between two people who know each other, then 5 spoken questions with four answer choices each and 30 seconds per question.
What this part tests
Listening to a Daily Life Conversation
The five questions test what people usually miss in casual speech: tone, what a speaker implies rather than says, and small decisions that change during the conversation. A speaker may agree and then change their mind, and the question asks about the final position.
Questions are spoken after the clip, with four choices on screen and 30 seconds each. Celpify's free Test 1 item for Part 2 includes the transcript so you can check exactly which sentence carried the answer.
The trap
Part 2 questions often ask how a speaker feels or why they said something. Answer choices that state a fact from the conversation can be true and still be wrong, because the question asked about attitude, not events.

How to score higher on Part 2
- Track each speaker separately. Write one column per person and note their opinion and any change of mind.
- Listen for softeners such as 'I guess' or 'maybe we could'. They signal hesitation, and hesitation is often what the question is about.
- Note the plan at the end. Casual conversations end with a decision, and one question almost always tests it.
- Ignore answer choices that sound too formal for a chat between friends. Distractors often use a register the speakers never used.
Part of the 38 scored Listening questions. The raw score converts to a CELPIP level from M to 12, and that level equals your CLB level.

Part 2 questions people ask
- How long is the Part 2 audio?
- About one and a half to two minutes, followed by five questions. The whole part takes about five minutes.
- What makes Part 2 different from Part 1?
- Part 1 is about solving a practical problem. Part 2 is about tone and implied meaning between people who know each other, so the questions ask why and how, not only what.
- Do I hear the questions or read them?
- You hear each question once and read the four choices on screen. You have 30 seconds per question.
- Is the free Part 2 item a full-length one?
- Yes. The Test 1 item is the same length and format as the other 49, with Canadian English voices, a transcript and answer explanations.
- How is Part 2 scored?
- Each correct answer adds to your raw Listening score out of 38. The raw score converts to a CELPIP level, and that level equals your CLB level for immigration purposes.
