Real Examples: How This Tool Helps

Here are three real situations where the calculator makes a big difference:

Example 1: Maria Checks if She Qualifies

Maria from the Philippines got her IELTS results. Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.5. She wants to know if she can apply for Express Entry.

She uses the calculator. Her scores are: CLB 9 (Listening), CLB 8 (Reading), CLB 7 (Writing), CLB 8 (Speaking). Express Entry needs CLB 7 minimum in all skills. She qualifies!

Result: Maria can start her Express Entry application.

Example 2: Raj Plans His Next Test

Raj took CELPIP. He got 9, 10, 7, 8 for Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking. His CLB levels are the same as his CELPIP scores. He wants more points for Express Entry.

The calculator shows him something important. If he improves Writing from CLB 7 to CLB 9, he gets 50 extra points. That's huge! He decides to focus only on Writing.

Result: Raj has a clear plan. He knows exactly what to practice.

Example 3: Ahmed Finds Another Way

Ahmed's IELTS scores convert to CLB 6 in all skills. He can't apply for Express Entry (needs CLB 7). He's disappointed.

But the calculator shows something else. Some Provincial Programs accept CLB 6. Ahmed looks into Saskatchewan's program. It needs CLB 4 minimum. He's well above that!

Result: Ahmed found a different path to Canada.

    Important to Know

Your lowest CLB score matters most. If you have CLB 10 in three skills but CLB 6 in one skill, you only qualify for programs that accept CLB 6. This is why you need good scores in all four skills.

    Ready to Improve Your Scores?

Now you know your CLB levels. The next step is getting better scores. Maybe you need CLB 9 for Express Entry. Or you want CLB 10 for maximum points.

    • When planning to retake – Find out which skills need more work

    CLB Calculator Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about using our free CLB calculator to convert IELTS and CELPIP scores to Canadian Language Benchmarks

Using the calculator is simple. First, click on either IELTS or CELPIP to select your test type. Then choose your scores for all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The calculator shows your CLB levels instantly. You'll see your results for each skill and which immigration programs accept your scores. The whole process takes less than 30 seconds. No account needed, no forms to fill out. Just your test scores in and CLB levels out.

Yes, the calculator is 100% accurate and follows official convertion tables.

The calculator supports IELTS General Training and CELPIP General. These are the two main English tests that IRCC accepts for immigration. Important: The calculator does not work with IELTS Academic. Immigration Canada only accepts IELTS General Training scores. If you took IELTS Academic for university, those scores cannot be used for immigration. You need to take IELTS General Training instead. CELPIP is fully computer-based and only available in Canada and a few other countries. Both tests are equally accepted by IRCC.

No account needed. The calculator is completely free to use. No signup, no registration, no email required. We don't collect or store any of your personal information. Just enter your test scores and see your CLB levels right away. You can use the calculator as many times as you want. It works on your phone, tablet, or computer. No app to download. This makes it fast and easy to check different score combinations.

Yes, you can enter scores for just one, two, three, or all four skills. This is useful if you're still waiting for your full results or practicing specific skills. The calculator will show CLB levels for whatever scores you enter. However, remember that Canadian immigration programs require scores in all four skills. Your lowest CLB score determines which programs you qualify for. So while the calculator can convert partial scores, you need all four skills completed for your actual immigration application.

IRCC only accepts IELTS General Training for immigration purposes. IELTS Academic is designed for university admissions, not immigration. This is a common mistake. Many people take IELTS Academic thinking it will work for immigration, but it won't. Check your IELTS certificate. If it says Academic at the top, you need to take IELTS General Training instead. The two tests are different. General Training has easier reading and writing sections focused on everyday situations. If you took the wrong test, you must retake it.

CELPIP scores and CLB levels are the same thing. If you score CELPIP 9, your CLB level is 9. It's a direct one-to-one match. CELPIP was designed to align with the CLB system. IELTS is different and needs conversion. For example, IELTS 8.0 in Listening equals CLB 9, but IELTS 7.0 in Speaking also equals CLB 9. The conversion is not the same for all skills. This is why you need a calculator for IELTS scores. Our tool handles all these conversions automatically for both test types.

The calculator will convert any test scores, no matter how old. However, IRCC has strict rules about test validity. Immigration Canada only accepts language test results from the past 2 years. Count from your test date, not the date you received results. If your results are older than 2 years when you submit your immigration application, they won't be accepted. You'll need to retake the test. The calculator can still help you see what your old scores would have been as CLB levels. This helps you know if your language skills have changed.

The calculator doesn't have a save function because we don't store any of your data. This protects your privacy. But you can easily save your results yourself. Take a screenshot on your phone or computer when you see your CLB levels. You can also print the page using your browser's print function. Save it as a PDF if you want a digital copy. We recommend saving your results so you can compare them later or share them with immigration consultants. Just remember, the calculator results are for planning only. Your official test certificate is what you submit to IRCC.

Manual conversion charts require you to look up each skill separately in different tables. It's slow and you can make mistakes reading the charts. Our calculator does everything instantly and accurately. You enter scores once and see all results at the same time. The calculator also shows you which immigration programs accept your CLB levels. Manual charts don't tell you this. Plus, our calculator works on mobile phones, while PDF charts are hard to read on small screens.

Yes, the calculator works perfectly on all phones and tablets. We designed it to be mobile-friendly. The buttons are large and easy to tap. The screen adjusts to fit your device. You don't need to download any app. Just visit the page on your phone's web browser. It works on iPhone, Android, and any other smartphone. Many people use it right after getting their test results via email. The calculator loads fast even on slower mobile connections. Save the page to your home screen for quick access later.

After the calculator shows your CLB levels, it tells you which immigration programs accept your scores. Programs like Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and others have different CLB requirements. The calculator checks your scores against these requirements. If you see a green checkmark, you meet the minimum language requirement for that program. This doesn't guarantee acceptance - programs have other requirements too like work experience and education. For detailed information about each program's full requirements, read our complete CLB guide.

Yes, you can use the calculator twice to compare both tests. First, enter your IELTS scores and see the CLB levels. Take a screenshot. Then select CELPIP and enter those scores. Compare the two screenshots. This helps you decide which test to take or retake. Some people do better on IELTS, others on CELPIP. The calculator shows you that what matters is the final CLB level, not which test you took. Both tests are equally accepted by IRCC. Choose the test where you can achieve higher CLB levels more easily.
