Task 1 asks you to advise someone you know about a decision: a cousin offered a job in another city, a friend choosing between two apartments, a colleague thinking about a course. You get 30 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to speak, the longest speaking time of the eight tasks.

Giving Advice

A strong answer gives two or three pieces of advice, each with a reason, and ends with a clear recommendation. The task is scored on Content and Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability, and Task Fulfillment; advising a named person about their actual decision is the fulfilment test.

How to score higher on Task 1

Use the 30 seconds to plan three beats: advice one, advice two, recommendation. Do not write full sentences.
Address the person by name and use 'you should' or 'I would'. Advice is direct.
Give one reason per piece of advice and one practical detail, such as a timeline or a first step.
Fill the 90 seconds. A 40-second answer to a 90-second task looks underdeveloped even when the English is clean.
