CELPIP Listening Part 5: Discussion
Part 5 is a discussion among three people who have to decide something together: where an office should move, how a project budget should be split, whether a new policy is a good idea. On the official test you watch a short video clip of the discussion. On Celpify you hear the same discussion as audio.
One discussion of about 1.5 to 2 minutes among three participants, then 8 questions shown on screen with four answer choices each. The official test shows the discussion as a video; Celpify plays the audio.
What this part tests
Listening to a Discussion
Eight questions follow, shown on screen with four choices each. They ask who holds which view, where two speakers agree or disagree, what changes someone's mind, and what the group decides. You do not hear the questions; you read them.
With three voices, keeping track of who said what is the whole task. Celpify's free Test 1 item for Part 5 includes the transcript with speaker labels so you can check each attribution after you answer.
The trap
The wrong answers in Part 5 attribute a real opinion to the wrong person. Every option in a 'who thinks' question was said by someone. The test is whether you noted the right name next to it.

How to score higher on Part 5
- Write the three names or roles as column headers before the clip starts, then put each opinion under the person who said it.
- Mark agreement and disagreement with a plus or a minus next to the name. Several questions ask who sided with whom.
- Note the moment someone changes position. The question about the final decision depends on it.
- Read each question stem for the name it asks about before you look at the choices.
Part of the 38 scored Listening questions. The raw score converts to a CELPIP level from M to 12, and that level equals your CLB level.

Part 5 questions people ask
- How many speakers are in Part 5?
- Three. They take part as equals in a discussion, unlike Parts 1 to 3, which have two speakers, or Parts 4 and 6, which have one.
- Is Part 5 a video on the real test?
- Yes. The official test shows a video clip of the discussion. Celpify plays the audio only, and the questions and timing are the same.
- Are the questions spoken?
- No. The eight questions appear on screen after the clip, each with four choices, and you answer within the shared time limit.
- How long is Part 5?
- About nine minutes in total: the clip of one and a half to two minutes, then eight questions.
- Is the Part 5 practice free?
- The Test 1 item is free, with the labelled transcript and answer explanations. The other 49 Part 5 items come with a plan.
